WHY IS ANYONE SURPRISED??

I just read an article in Salon titled, Is Briana Waters A Terrorist?
about the fate of Briana Waters tried under the new Terrorism Law for an ELF (Environment Liberation Front) fire. My first reaction was "Oh come on!", mixed with unease about feeling sorry for a member of ELF.

Let me begin by stating that while I have very strong views on protecting the environment, I am fundamentally uncomfortable with the tactics of such organizations as ELF.

My major concern is that with the new, basically unfettered laws allowing the government to eavesdrop on my calls, or to snap me up and hold me without charge and suspend my right to habeous corpus if they suspect me of any terrorist activities. But then I have to ask myself, just what is considered to be domestic terrorism in the new world after 9/11? What little indisrection will get one thrown in the slammer without a key?

I hear all the time that these new measures are to make sure we are safe. But I don't think I trust the sources.
